Did you know that one of Canada’s top illustrators was born in Owen Sound? Her name is Shelagh Armstrong, an award-winning designer and illustrator. A graduate of OSCVI, she also went to the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Art, holding degrees in Fine Arts and Communications and Design.
Launching her illustration career in the Canadian book industry and working with publishing houses such as McClelland and Stewart, Armstrong’s accomplishments include cover illustration for many acclaimed authors such as Alberto Manguel, Dionne Brand, Lillian Nattel and Shauna Singh Baldwin.
A versatile artist, she has worked as a courtroom illustrator, excelled at projects with retail fashion giants, and produced award-winning work with top Canadian design firms. Over the years of her career, she has been commissioned for private portraits and has exhibited her work in private and university galleries and in group and solo exhibits.
In recent years, Shelagh Armstrong has received commissions from Canada Post for two Canadian stamps. The first came in 1997 when Canada Post celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the world’s largest indoor equestrian and agricultural competition.
The second stamp Armstrong designed was in 1999 and was used to commemorate the United Nations International Year of Older Persons. Shelagh Armstrong of Owen Sound currently lives in Toronto.
