It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mark Roppel Waugh on June 30, 2025 at Brightshores Health System in Markdale at the age of 74. Beloved husband and best friend of Linda (nee.Shouldice). Loving father of Matthew (Rebecca) and Daniel. Special Papa to Hannah and Spencer. Treasured brother of Thomas Waugh. Predeceased by his parents, Rev. T.R. and Hope Waugh, as well as by his sisters, Rachel and Joanna. He was much loved by his nephews Peter (Margaux) MacPherson, Andrew (Alison) McPherson, and nieces, Sarah (Cris) Brunetti and Rebecca (Blake Meyers) MacPherson, and their children. Missed by brother-in-law‘s Stewart (Trish) Shouldice, Dennis (Barbara Janzen) Shouldice and David (Nancy) Shouldice and all of their children.
Mark was born in London, Ontario, on March 17, 1951, and was one of four children of his minister father and a teacher mother. He grew up in Lambeth, Brantford, Guelph, and Hamilton. He attended McMaster University (Honours B.Sc., 1973), where he played on the University basketball team for four years. He was often cited in the Hamilton Spectator for his crafty plays. He attended Waterloo University (M.Sc.Kinesiology 1974) and worked for a year at the Pulmonary Function Lab at Toronto Western Hospital. Feeling a deeper call, Mark pursued theological studies at Emmanuel College, Victoria University, where he met his future wife Linda, who was completing her M.R.E (1977) and they were married on September 17, 1977. He completed four mission field placements in Saskatchewan, Toronto, and Montreal before achieving his Master of Divinity (1979) and became an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada. He had a deep faith and love of God, and he carried it with him to three pastoral charges. Linda and Mark were settled in a four point charge in Craik, Saskatchewan (1979-1984). They loved the western culture and adopted their first son Matthew in 1983 while living in Craik. They were then called to a two point charge (1984-2002) in Elora, Ontario. They adopted their second son Daniel in 1985 and in 2002 they were called to his last pastoral charge at Annesley United Church in Markdale Ontario. Each pastoral experience was wonderful for the Waughs and all of Mark’s parishioners were special to him.
Mark enjoyed playing basketball, hockey curling and fishing at the Pointe au Barrel cottage with his sons and Waugh relatives He developed a keen interest in woodworking and he started the woodworking guild at Annesley United and led it for 21 years. He renovated a farm near Beaver Valley, and loved working with, and teaching his two sons, the art of his craft. Mark loved gardening and planted a large garden on their farm for the Annesley Church use. He organized his parishioners to plant, weed and harvest every Friday evening. The money went to support the Camp funds to send any young people to any United Church camp they chose. Mark enjoyed playing the trumpet in church and nursing homes. He also played in the Fergus and Owen Sound Cities Brass Bands. He played acoustic guitar in Church often in his early years. Mark had a kind and outgoing spirit. He enjoyed stopping anywhere for a friendly chat. He had a deep love for all people and any time spent with them was special to him. A life well lived, but cut too short. Rest in peace, Mark. Love Linda.
