Sadly, we announce the passing of James Robert Burlington at Brightshores Health System – Owen Sound on Thursday, February 12th after a courageous battle with cancer.
Beloved husband of Joan Burlington (née Proud) for 50 years. Loving father of Jerry Burlington (Leanne Michielsen) and Jeff Burlington (Diane Liska). Known as Grandpa Jimmy or ‘Big Grandpa’ to his four grandsons: Quinn, Rhys, Sawyer and Finley. These boys meant the world to Jim. He loved hearing all about and watching them engage in their various activities, always slipping them some cash or treats while saying goodbye.
Dear brother of Bill Burlington (Cheryl) and Ann Standen (Rob).
Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Winnifred Burlington (née Keiller), sister Susan Young, and brother Mike Burlington.
Jim was born in Toronto on March 11th, 1945, though soon moved to Owen Sound where he would spend the vast majority of his life. Jim attended Victoria Public School and OSCVI. He would often reminisce on his goal scoring exploits (six goals in one game) and his track and field prowess as intermediate track and field champ.
After some computer training in Toronto, he moved back home and gained employment at RBW graphics in 1973, staying for 35 years, and making a lasting impact on many. Sports were a huge part of Jim’s life as he spent countless hours at local hockey rinks coaching, managing or cheering on his sons, and in later years, his grandsons. Golfing was a lifelong passion for Burly; a member at Legacy Ridge (formerly Owen Sound Golf & Country Club) for over 50 years, he claimed numerous titles while nailing six hole-in-ones (including his last one at the age of 79).
Jimmy leaves behind numerous friends who will miss their chats but are left with countless anecdotes that will make them chuckle for years to come.
A come-and-go memorial visitation to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in the Rutherford Room, 1900 3rd Ave E, Owen Sound on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 3:00 p.m., memories shared will be livestreamed. Consider dressing up in your favourite golf shirt or sports jersey. Since Jimmy wasn’t a flower person, if desired, any donation to a charity of your own choice would be welcomed.
