Iowna Turner passed away peacefully at Rockwood Terrace, Durham on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Iowna Doris Alcox, an identical twin, was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Markdale, daughter of W.W. and Gladys Alcox. She is happily reunited with her husband, Eldon Turner, whom she married on May 14, 1955. He passed away in 2019.

Dearly loved and forever missed by her children, Lynne (Cliff Hastie) of Mount Forest, Jayne (Don) Mulligan of Flesherton, Gwen (the late Brian March) of Owen Sound, Anne (Peter McLaughlin) of Johnville, New Brunswick and Brent (Cathy) Turner of Durham. Loving Grandma to Chris Mulligan of Flesherton, Brad (Lisa) Mulligan of Markdale, Mike (Crystal) Turner of Neustadt and Kim (John) Giancos of Lake Rosalind. Also missed by her great-grandchildren Jacob (Roslyn Schill) Mulligan, Emily Mulligan, Blake Turner, Lucan Turner, Avery Turner, Bailey Giancos, Turner Giancos and Larissa (Bailey) Miller and great-great-grandson Beau.

Predeceased by her twin sister Leona Allison, sister Doreen Tuck, brother Bill Alcox and brothers-in-law Bob Tuck, George McInnis and Jack Hunter, as well as Eldon’s siblings Harold (Evelyn) Turner, Evelyn (Aubrey) MacDonald, and Doug (Muriel) Turner. Survived by sisters Ruth McInnis of Barrie, Maryon Hunter of Shelburne and brother-in-law Joe Allison of Markdale, as well as many nieces and nephews, some of whom considered her almost a second mother.

Iowna taught for a year at SS#8, the one room schoolhouse on the Eighth Line of the former Artemesia Township where she met the love of her life. She and Eldon farmed and raised their children on the farm, founded by his grandfather, in the area officially designated as Turner’s Hill. Her top priority was family, both her immediate and extended, sharing a special bond with her twin sister. Together she and Eldon hosted annual Alcox and Turner-Magee picnics for 50 years. While working full-time in the kitchen at Grey Owen Lodge, now Grey Gables, she went back to night school at Georgian College, with five children and a husband at home, and studied to become a Health Care Aide. She loved the job and the residents and, after retiring, continued to volunteer at the nursing home until she was 80 years old.

She was known for her full-course meals made from scratch and baking, especially butter tarts and pies, and the huge vegetable garden she tended each summer. She found peace in the garden. She also enjoyed a good game of cards, especially Crazy Eights and Solitaire, and doing Search-a-Word puzzles.

The family will receive friends at Fawcett Funeral Cremation Reception, Flesherton on Wednesday, July 29 from 4:00-7:00pm and again on Thursday from 10:00-11:00am. Funeral service on Thursday at 11:00am. Cremation has taken place and interment at Salem Cemetery in the future.
