Betty Shaw

Betty, our cherished mother, matriarch, and very own Queen, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025 at Meaford Long Term Care with family by her side, at the age of 93.
Betty was the cherished wife of the late Lawrence Shaw and the much-loved mother of Margaret Leavey (Paul), Lorraine Meyer (Ron), Diane Baecklund (Bodo), and Nigel Shaw (Jenn).
As Betty always said, she did her part for Canada and the family grew with her legacy of 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Betty loved any occasion to celebrate any and all holidays, we are blessed to have shared so many. Although every inch of her was British, she also felt more Canadian because she chose to live here. We adored our mother and as we attempt to heal our broken hearts, we celebrate a wonderful mother with a life well lived.
Born in Yorkshire, England, Betty was the daughter of Sidney and Margaret Barron. The oldest and only girl with four brothers, the late Ron, Derrick, and Terry and surviving loved brother Keith in Thirsk, England. Betty often spoke of fond memories growing up with her grandparents and stories from her youth to anyone with an open ear.
Mum was proud of her heritage and made sure we all eventually learned to make a decent trifle and batch of Yorkshire puddings. Betty was a force to those who knew her; never afraid to speak up, advocate for others, and amaze everyone with her determination in all facets of her health and life. She was a hard worker whether it be helping her mother with four boys, working at Boots Pharmacy with the chemist, working on the farm, or nursing in long term care. She faced life challenges head on with that British grit and the resilience of those of her generation.
Always the centre of attention, Betty loved meeting new people. She had a genuine interest in getting to know their individual story. You always knew a visit was never going to be just a “pop in”. At 93, she looked younger than her years and never ventured out without primping her hair and applying lipstick. Betty said it’s important to love yourself. She leaves us with many life lessons and memories to last a lifetime.
The family would like to thank the Meaford Long Term Care staff, especially those on Trout Hollow Trail, for their tender care particularly during the recent few weeks. The genuine outpouring of love for our mother is overwhelming and will never be forgotten. To her “Little Girls”, thank you for treating Mum like you would your own.
A private service and interment will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Meaford Nursing Home Auxiliary (cheques or eTransfer only) would be appreciated in support of the resident’s fun and exciting excursions and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
