Beatrice Adelaide Ewing at Sunnyside Home, Kitchener early Friday, July 11, 2025, and Alexander MacLaren Ewing at Sunnyside Home, Kitchener late Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Parents of Cheryl Ewing of Kitchener, Sandy Ewing of Alberta and Susan Ewing of Wiarton. Much loved grandparents of Lisa (Shawn Kauk) and Jessica and great grandparents of Jackson, Owen and Brynn. Missed by Alex’s sister Sheila Ewing of Wiarton and Judie Weir of Michigan as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bea was an avid curler, community volunteer and homemaker. She was an amazing baker, keeping Sandy’s road hockey friends well fed with Allan, Mark & Greg’s favourite cookies. She kept the family in home-made jams and pickles. Alex loved her pies – whichever was in front of him at the moment was his favourite, and butter tarts to die for. She would not describe herself as creative but she did beautiful work in paper tole and for many years, she would knit mitts, scarves and hats for Christmas gifts for nieces and nephews. Active in the community, she worked with kids who had intellectual disabilities, volunteered at the curling clubs in Capreol, North Bay and Wiarton and was very involved in the development of the Wiarton train station and instrumental in the addition of a bandshell making the station a centre of the community. She was also very involved in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church as a trustee and fundraising volunteer – many a church dinner was successful because of her contributions.
After Alex’s retirement, Bea was happy to return to Wiarton to be closer to brother Jack and brother-in-law Jim. They now had time to travel including New Zealand, Australia, Colorado, San Francisco, Alberta, and British Columbia. During their Central Europe tour, she almost got lost in Austria. In Newfoundland she started to get frustrated with Alex and Cheryl for stopping to take MORE pictures of fishing villages. She loved their Alaska Cruise and enjoyed her steamboat Mississippi cruise.
Alex was a proud employee of CN Rail, primarily working in Northern Ontario continuing through to retirement. He and Bea became avid curlers during that time, which passion continued their entire lifetime. A patient, gentle, social man unable to sit still, his work ethic was honoured by his many clients including INCO upon his retirement. As a golfer he was proudest when he finished with more golf balls than when he started his game.
After retiring Alex and Bea moved back to the town of their youth, Wiarton. Retirement gave them time to travel, visiting New Zealand, Australia, Central Europe, Colorado, San Fransicso, Alberta, Newfoundland, British Columbia, an Alaska cruise and steamboat adventure on the Mississippi. He began to pursue wordworking producing many beautiful works of intarsia and woodturning which he shared with family. He loved small town living which allowed him to walk to pick up the mail and drop in to visit friends at home and work. With more time on his hands he was determined to decimate every dandelion that dared appear in his lawn. For many years he was an active volunteer at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church.
The joint funeral service for Bea and Alex Ewing will be conducted from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 553 Gould Street, Wiarton on Wednesday, July 23rd at 1:00 p.m. Interment Bayview Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, Wiarton. Expressions of remembrance to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer Society of Grey Bruce would be appreciated.
