Bruce Power has donated $360,000 to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation to support cancer research, education and clinical care to benefit patients at home and around the world.
The donation coincides with the four-year anniversary of the commercial launch of Bruce Power’s Isotope Production System (IPS). In October 2022, Unit 7 became the first commercial power reactor in the world to produce lutetium-177. A second line was subsequently added, making the company a reliable supplier of the cancer-fighting isotope for the global health-care community.
Lutetium-177 is a radioactive medical isotope used in targeted radionuclide therapy to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
“Bruce Power continues to be a strong partner in creating more ordinary tomorrows for patients and their loved ones,” says President and Chief Executive Officer of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Dr. Miyo Yamashita. “This generous donation will be instrumental in helping to fund vital research and clinical care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the world’s leading cancer research and treatment centres.”
The funds will be used by the foundation to support theranostics fellowships at the cancer centre – part of the University Health Network (UHN) – over the next three years.
“We’re proud to support the great work the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and UHN do to help in the fight against cancer,” says Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President at Bruce Power James Scongack. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and medical isotopes are helping to provide targeted therapies to treat this disease we hope research will help eradicate.”
