Richard Thomas is the new mayor of Owen Sound.
Unofficial results show Thomas won 50 per cent of the vote for mayor with 3,522 votes.
Thomas tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, “At the door, I heard lots and lots about the downtown river district. I also heard lots about high taxes of course as a common theme in Owen Sound , something that successive council have been working on over the past number of years and I’ve got my own ideas of what we might be able to do to help that.”
Thomas defeated the following mayoral candidates:
Carol Merton 2,763 39%
Andrii Zvorygin 421 6%
Mike Seiler 142 2%
Jodi King 138 2%
Ray Botten 76 1%
In his own words on our Bayshore Broadcasting News candidate Q & A, Thomas says, “With the exception of one three-year term, I have been on the board of the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library, for most of those years as chair. I was a city councillor from 2014-2022, and sat on all of the city’s standing committees, as well as chairing the Economic Development, Tourism and Culture Committee; I also chaired the Tom Thomson Art Gallery Advisory Committee. I was a member of the board of the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation for many years, and led the citizen group which saved the Owen Sound Marine and Rail Museum, forming the first board of the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre.”
