Harry Nansi and John Banks scored power play goals early in the third period as the Owen Sound Attack — rebranded the Owen Sound Greys for the night — downed London Knights 5-1 in Ontario Hockey League action at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre Saturday evening.
Adrian Manzo, Alex Lisi and Pierce Mbuyi also scored for the Attack (4-8-1), which extended its point-streak to three-games.
Carson Harmer had the lone goal for London (8-3-0-1).
The Attack took the ice in special cream-colour Greys jerseys — with orange stripes and black trim, almost a Philadelphia Flyers colour pattern — for the first time this season. The team is wearing Greys sweaters at 12 home games this season in honour of the 100th anniversary of the 1927 Memorial Cup winning Owen Sound Greys.
The big moment in the game came in the final minute of the second when Dillon Atkinson dropped the gloves with Cody Wood of the Knights off a centre-ice faceoff. They traded punches, and then near centre a major scrum broke out with the remaining players on the ice. Misconduct penalties were handed out all around. But Brody Leet of the Knights dropped his gloves and tried to get into a fight away from the first engagement — and got five-minute major and game misconduct for aggressor and a fight after an original altercation.
That sent the Attack to a five minute power play that carred into the third. And they capitalized.
First Nansi, then Banks. Two power play goals in the first 3:26 of the third put Owen Sound up 3-1. Lisi then made it 4-1. And Mbuyi sealed it with an empty-netter.
Maksim Corovic started the game for Owen Sound and made 22 saves on 23 shots against, but left in the second period with a lower-body injury.
Attack Head Coach Keenan Reynolds says the team will have an emergency backup for Sunday’s game against Barrie Colts as Corovic is expected to miss some time.
Ryerson Leenders stopped 11 after entering the game and picked up the win, while Aleksei Medvedev made 25 stops in the loss. The Knights outshot the Attack 34-30 while going 0 for 4 on the power play; Owen Sound finished 2 for 6.
Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Owen Sound hosts Barrie Colts.
