The Town of Saugeen Shores says it’s not planning to sell its tourist camps.
The Town issued a note on social media and its website after it received a number of inquiries about the purpose and goals of its tourist camp strategic assessment currently underway.
Saugeen Shores owns two seasonal campgrounds, one in Port Elgin and one in Southampton. They have seasonal residents and a few short-term sites for trailers.
The Town says in a statement, it was actually planned back in 2024, but deferred until now.
It says, “The assessment will provide Council with detailed and current information to support responsible long-term planning for these important municipal assets. The Town is not intending to sell the Tourist Camps.”
The Town says StrategyCorp has been hired to do the strategic assessment, looking at the overall business case and long-term sustainability of each campground and the Port Elgin Harbour, rates and fees, tourism trends, facility condition, future capital needs, infrastructure requirements, reserve contributions, service levels, utilities, amenities, capacity pressures, expansion opportunities, and potential surplus lands.
Surveys are being circulated to harbour and tourist camp stakeholders to gather feedback.
They say anyone with a connection to the camps may complete the online survey before September 16, 2026.
A final report is expected to come to council in February 2027 with a 10-year outlook to inform decision making.
