With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of R. Marie Hargrave (née Balls) on September 5, 2026, in her 85th year.
Born May 17, 1942, in Albemarle Township, Bruce County, Marie was the beloved daughter of the late Walter and Mary (née White) Balls. She grew up in Adamsville and settled in Dundalk following her marriage to David Vernon Neil “Vern” Hargrave. It was there that she built a beautiful life and raised her family. A Registered Nurse, she spent most of her career at Centre Grey Hospital in Markdale, caring for patients from across the community over many rewarding years. Through her nursing and long involvement with Dundalk United Church, she became a familiar and respected part of town life.
Outside her nursing career, Marie was happiest outdoors — in the garden or out for a walk. She loved animals, and her house was full of photographs of her with dogs. Family and colleagues alike knew her fast pace, whether she was covering ground on a country road or moving purposefully down a hospital corridor, always with a nurse’s energy for getting things done.
She was known for her immense kindness and open heart. Her warmth, ready smile, and easy conversation will be missed by all who knew her.
Marie was a deeply devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She leaves her children, Ian and Eric (Krista), and her cherished grandchildren, Emma, Lila, and Annabel, of whom she was endlessly proud. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Vern, and by her brother Norman Balls (Vivian) and her sister Amy Balls (Merve). She will be deeply missed by her extended family, neighbours, and former nursing colleagues.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Grey Gables in Markdale, whose kindness and care for Marie in her final years meant a great deal to her and to us. She was known and loved throughout the home, and we are grateful to everyone who looked after her.
Family and friends are invited to gather to honour her life and share memories on Saturday, September 12, 2026:
Visitation — 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., McMillan & Jack Funeral Home, 291 Main Street East, Dundalk
Memorial Service — 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home
Interment — 12:00 p.m., Maxwell Cemetery, Maxwell
Reception — following the interment at the Dundalk United Church, 200 Main Street East, Dundalk
In memory of her lifelong career and community spirit, donations may be made to Dundalk United Church, the Brightshores Markdale Hospital Foundation, Grey Gables, or the Alzheimer’s Society.
