Owen Sounders may have seen Lesley Wilson out on the bay in her white kayak over the last several weeks, and that’s because she’s been training for a big trip for a cause.
Starting June 16th, she is due to paddle from Owen Sound to Peterborough in support of Autism Ontario.
Wilson says she has two grandchildren who have autism. “Absolutely wonderful people. They are the main reason why I’m doing it,” says Wilson adding, “I also have a gentleman in my neighbourhood who I work with who is autistic. Also for him and generally for the caregivers.”
Wilson, who is now retired, used to paddle frequently in her 20s and 30s.
Lately she’s gone back to it and feels fitter than ever. “I’ve been challenging myself over the years to kayak on the big waters. I love it.”
She says this year, “I’ve been able to head up against some strong winds and some big waves and it’s been great.”
The trip, depending on route will range from 400km to 600 km. Wilson says it take her over the waters of Georgian Bay to Port Severn and then into the Trent-Severn Waterway through the locks and into the city of Peterborough.
Money raised will go to the Autism Ontario’s Central-East region which covers Grey Bruce.
There are a few ways you can help, says Wilson, “Join me on my paddle. If you’re in the area and you see me kayaking, get your boat out, get your kayak out, whatever you want to do. Come out and say hello to me, support me along the way, have a little conversation, make sure that I’m doing okay and whatnot. I think that would be fantastic to meet all these people along the way.”
You can donate online on her Facebook page at Lesley C Wilson. “I have a QR code on there. It will take you right to my Autism Ontario donation page.”
