The Owen Sound North Stars Legacy Ridge Golf Club Junior Elite Women’s League (JEWL) lacrosse team capped a successful weekend with a narrow 12-11 win over the visiting Toronto Beaches on Sunday. The victory followed a 12-9 triumph over the Halton Hills Bulldogs the previous day, lifting Owen Sound to 3–1 on the season.
The North Stars came out strong, controlling play from the opening draw. London Doyle and Bree Wilkins each scored twice in the first nine minutes, staking Owen Sound to an early 4-0 lead. Toronto took back to back penalties late in the quarter, but instead of extending their advantage, the North Stars surrendered a shorthanded goal allowing the Beaches to close the gap to 4-1 after 15 minutes.
Momentum shifted to the visitors in the second quarter as the Beaches found their rhythm. Toronto outscored Owen Sound 6-3 in the frame to pull even at 7-7 by halftime. Wilkins, Scarlett Stevenson, and Camryn Laycock provided the North Stars’ goals in the quarter.
The third quarter tightened considerably, with both teams managing just one goal. Doyle scored the lone marker for Owen Sound as the teams entered the final frame tied 8–8.
The fourth quarter delivered the drama expected in a one goal finish. The teams traded goals to reach a 10-10 deadlock with under five minutes remaining. Doyle broke the tie with her fourth goal of the afternoon, scoring with just under four minutes left. Ella Todd then buried the eventual game-winner with 1:21 remaining, giving Owen Sound the edge they needed to secure the win.
Wilkins powered the North Stars’ offence with a seven-point performance, scoring five goals and adding two assists. Doyle posted a five-point game, scoring four times while adding an assist. Single goals were scored by Stevenson, Laycock, and Todd.
The North Stars will next be in action on Tuesday when they travel to Aurora for a neutral site matchup versus Kawartha.
