Grey Bruce Public Health is confirming that two Canadians who were on the MV Hondius cruise ship live in the Grey-Bruce region.
The ship has been gaining attention for its link to hantavirus outbreak over the past several weeks.
The pair are said to be doing well, and are not experiencing any symptoms of hantavirus-related illnesses
They are also being actively supported by Grey Bruce Public Health while they isolate at home.
They have been isolating since their return to the region on April 25th.
According to media sources, a third Canadian, from Quebec, is also isolating after being on the same flight as the two people from Grey Bruce.
The ship departed Argentina on April 1st, before making several stops around isolated islands in the South Atlantic.
Hantaviruses are carried by rodents, and can spread through the animals’ urine and feces.
In humans, hantavirus can cause two main diseases: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).
Grey Bruce Public Health confirms that while the two residents are experiencing no symptoms, protocols are in place to connect the individuals with health care in the event that it is needed.
Public health says that the risk to other community members remains extremely low.
