Aunt to many generations of loved nieces and nephews.
Together Judy and Mervyn raised four daughters instilling in them values of
respect for others, thoughtfulness, generosity, investing in family, lifelong learning and a love for the Lord.
Being introduced to Jesus and trusting in Him, changed her life from the beginning of knowing Him to the very end. In her final days of life, Judy was confident, knowing that she would be with her Saviour soon, trusting that “God’s timing was perfect.” Judy’s love for and trust in the Lord touched her family’s lives. She could always be counted on to pray.
At the age of 15, Judy attended the Stratford Teachers’ College taking the two-year program out of Grade 12. In her second year, she met Mervyn there. When Judy graduated from Teachers’ College, she first taught in Underwood in a one-room schoolhouse with all eight grades. After marrying in 1961, Judy and Mervyn team-taught in Kinloss in a one-room schoolhouse for a year, teaching all 8 grades. Then, due to the school policy, Judy was no longer allowed to teach when she became pregnant; nonetheless, she returned to teaching whenever she could. Two years after their first child was born, they moved to Preston for one year and then settled in Galt so that Mervyn could continue his studies at Wilfred Laurier University. Judy then taught at a two-room school with Mervyn at Riverside Elementary School, before teaching at a variety of other schools over the years.
During the summers, Judy attended professional development upgrading courses to advance her career and gain knowledge for enhancing the learning process of her students. Through these courses, Judy accepted the challenge to become one of four teachers to pioneer bringing computers into the classroom while also educating other teachers to adopt the new technology. Judy spent her last professional years at Hespeler Public School as Teacher/Librarian before retiring in 1995.
Retirement gave Judy the opportunity to continue her value of lifelong learning. She continued to pursue her passions of family, travel, music, sports, games, quilting, authoring and editing books and researching and recording genealogy with her faith woven throughout. After retiring, Judy enjoyed following in her parents’ footsteps by travelling to Arizona for the winters, where she volunteered to teach computer skills to others and provided tech support to anyone in need. Judy joined the quilting club where she continued to not only learn new skills, techniques, and patterns, but also apply her knowledge in order to create beautiful quilts for her family and others. In between quilts, Judy passionately researched family history while using her tech skills to teach others how to use the latest genealogy software, and when she was no longer able to travel to Arizona, she continued to work online both with friends in Arizona and friends here in Cambridge.
Wherever Judy went, she made lifelong friends, through teaching, quilting, genealogy and computers. Her phenomenal memory enabled her to understand information and apply it while engaging with others.
Judy enjoyed sports tremendously, especially hockey, baseball, and curling. She regularly watched her favourite sports and enjoyed good banter about team rivalries with family and friends. She loved to research facts about her favourite teams and share the information with others. Judy often shared how she enjoyed watching Mervyn play sports while cheering on his team. She was also a very proud supporter of her children and grandchildren playing sports, attending their games whenever she could.
Judy cherished her family deeply. Her greatest joy was to spend time with both her immediate and extended family, especially when she had all of her family together. Great anticipation accompanied her planning to travel to Texas and Peru to see her grandchildren, followed by ample storytelling afterwards. Staying in touch with extended family and supporting family reunions were highlights in her life.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Walker and the medical community including the emergency team, PSW’s, the Forward community and supportive neighbors.
Resting at Forward Church (55 Franklin Blvd, Cambridge) on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 10:30am until the time of the service at 12pm. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service in Cameron Hall. Judy will be laid to rest privately at Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge.
