Construction has begun on South Bruce Peninsula’s new town hall in Wiarton.
It’s located in the old Sobeys grocery store which overlooks Colpoy’s Bay and Bluewater Park.
The $9.6 million renovation of half of the old store into a new town hall, with the other half to be determined is being done by Allen Hastings Ltd.
Jamie Hastings posted an update to social media saying, “We’re just getting started on the new town hall here in Wiarton and we’re just doing some initial demolition inside,” noting they’re also preparing the lot for fencing on the outside.
“Things are going well,” said Hastings.
The Town says the current town hall is cramped and requires major upgrades, including accessibility requirements.
In 2024, the Town purchased the former Sobeys building and half will be town hall, while a remaining 12,000 square feet will remain vacant until an appropriate use is found for it.
A community input survey closed earlier this year and since then, council has discussed possible uses for the other half. The ceilings have been deemed not high enough for a lot of recreational uses.
The Town Hall is expected to be operational in 2027.
