Kincardine council has approved a Remembrance crosswalk.
The request was presented to council during Wednesday’s meeting by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 183.
Legion President Teri Leslie presented the proposed design for the crosswalk, saying that it was “Simple, respectful, yet impactful.”
Leslie said that a crosswalk made sense as a small token of remembrance with a big impact.
“A crosswalk is something we all use,” she explained. “Kids walking to school, parents walking uptown, seniors popping into the legion for some camaraderie. Each time someone steps onto it, or pulls their car up to it, they are gently reminded that the freedoms we all enjoy were earned by others.”
The proposal is that the crosswalk be installed at the west-side crossing of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace, which is the closest intersection to the Kincardine Legion building.
“This is a small piece of pavement, but it carries a very powerful message. It says that Kincardine remembers, Kincardine respects service and sacrifice, and it says that remembrance here is not limited to one day in November, but it lives on every day.”
The goal is to install the commemorative crosswalk in July to be ready for the official 100-year birthday of the Legion on July 17, 2026.
