Nick Sykora was overtime hero as the Owen Sound Attack rallied to beat the Sarnia Sting 5-4 in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Lenny Greenberg scored twice and finished with four points, earning the nod as the game’s first star. Greenberg put a point shot through traffic and past Patrick Quinlan with 53 seconds remaining in the third to tie things up 4-4 and send the game to overtime.
Pierce Mbuyi and Elliot Arnett also scored for the Attack (24-30-3-5).
Mbuyi also added an assist, putting up two points in his first game wearing the ‘C’ for Owen Sound. The second-year forward was named the 30th captain in Attack history on Saturday.
The win for Owen Sound coupled with the Erie Otters loss in regulation to the London Knights, officially locked up a playoff berth for the Attack for a 15th straight season.
Easton Walos scored twice for Sarnia (18-36-8-1), while Matthew Manza and Tyler Challenger also had goals. The Sting lost their fifth in a row.
The Attack led 3-2 heading into the third, then the Sting found a pair of goals to take a 4-3 lead. But Owen Sound would find the answer with the extra attacker on the ice in the final minute.
Matthew Koprowski made 30 saves in the win, while Quinlan stopped 31 taking the loss. The Attack outshot Sarnia 36-34 while going 1 for 2 on the power play; the Sting were 2 for 4.
Up next for the Attack is a trip to Brampton Tuesday morning for a school day game against the Steelheads.
