A group of men are looking to start a Men’s Shed in Saugeen Shores and there’s an upcoming information meeting about it.
Organizers say the Men’s Shed is about connection, purpose, and community somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to.
Wayne Kaufman says about seven men have been discussing creating the group, and they recently visited the Bruce Men’s Shed in Ferndale.
“They go on hikes to the Grotto, they have golf tournaments, they have barbecues for fundraisers for the community. They are currently building miniature shuffle boards and are going to sell them as a fundraiser,” says Kaufman who also says the Bruce Men’s shed built planters for the care centre in Wiarton to sell as a fundraiser, and they build birdhouses for kids to put together on Canada Day.
He adds, “We see the need in Southampton for this type of thing.” He says Men’s Sheds started in Australia, saying, “Men’s sheds across the world have become very active in the communities.”
Kaufman notes it’s the Propeller Club and the Chantry Seniors Centre who are trying to start up the men’s shed.
The information centre is scheduled for Thursday, February 12th at 10 a.m. at the Southampton Chantry Centre at 35 Grey Street South in Southampton.
Kaufman says, “We are in the early stages and welcome anyone interested in learning more or helping shape what the Men’s Shed can become in Saugeen Shores.”
