Peacefully at Brightshores Health System – Owen Sound on Monday, October 27, 2025. Born in Owen Sound on June 3, 1931, Mary Carolyn Grace McKee (nee Middlebro’) of Owen Sound was in her 95th year.
Beloved wife of Dr. Robert McKee of Owen Sound. Loving mother of Sheila McKee-Protopapas (Les) of Waterloo, and Robert McKee (Barbara) of Owen Sound. Cherished Nana of Grace Protopapas Dunford (Jordan), Helen Protopapas (Jake Davidson), Lachlan McKee (Sarah), Malcolm McKee (Emelia Houghton) and Kenna McKee. Proud great Nana of Caroline and Keith Dunford, and Tessa Davidson. Dear sister of Betty Whiddington of England and sister-in-law of Sally Sturdy of Cambridge. Carolyn will also be missed by her nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by her sons Matthew McKee and William McKee, parents Charles and Mary Middlebro’, and by her brothers-in-law Richard Whiddington and Peter Sturdy.
Carol graduated from the nursing program at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, and worked for a year as a nurse before heading off on the adventure of a life time – hitchhiking around Europe with three friends. When she returned, reluctantly, she took a job in Owen Sound and soon met the love of her life, dentist Bob McKee. They were married less than a year later, and celebrated their 70th anniversary on October 15th of this year.
Four children quickly followed, but that didn’t stop Carol from pursuing her passions – music and art. Carol had a beautiful alto voice and sang in many choirs over the years. She also sketched, painted, led children’s craft classes and designed and produced tapestries for her church. Carol took up cross-country skiing in her 50’s and enjoyed skiing locally as well as ski trips farther afield with Bob and their friends.
She was also an active volunteer in the community and remained so until only recently. Despite her many talents and accomplishments, Carol was the kindest, gentlest, most loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, and her loss will be felt profoundly by many.
Visitation will be held at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th St. W., Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Carol’s life will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 1049 4th Ave. E., Owen Sound, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Mark Loyal officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Autism Ontario or Stephen Lewis Foundation would be appreciated and can be arranged through the funeral home. Online condolences can be sent to Carol’s family by visiting her memorial at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
