Saugeen Shores council is due to look at moving the Port Elgin fire station to Mill Creek road.
Currently, it’s located downtown.
A staff report from Fire Chief Ed Melanson is on council’s agenda tonight.
It says, the preferred location for a new station is informed by firefighter response times, municipal property ownership, minimal environmental impact, and appropriate property size. The department looked at two locations, 640 Mill Creek Road and 1240 Mackenzie Road.
If approved, the new site would be at 640 Mill Creek Road (Cameron Park) behind the high school and the curling club.
Back in 2023, the Town’s fire master plan and its business plan noted a new fire station would be needed because of health and safety legislation and increased demand as the community grows.
If approved, design and engineering could start in 2026 followed by the build in 2027 – 2028. It’s included in the special capital tax levy.
