Peacefully at Southbridge Owen Sound on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Thomas “Tom” Brown of Owen Sound was in his 93rd year.
Loving husband of Margaret Brown (nee Murray) for 63 years. Proud father of Graham Brown (Kelly Ross) of Ottawa and Gillian Allan (Clark Allan) of Brampton. Fun-loving grandpa of Sarah, Lauren and Jordan. Tom will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Hilda Brown (nee Teasdale), and siblings Jean Sanders (David) and Jack Brown (Jean).
Tom was born and raised near Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. He began working in a coal mine at the age of 14 and joined the Royal Navy at 19. He met Margaret in 1959, fell in love, and married her in February 1962. Two years later, he left the Navy to be home with his new family. In pursuit of a better life for Graham & Gillian, Tom and Margaret sold their belongings and relocated to Canada in 1972, settling in Owen Sound. Tom built a long and stable career with Macdonald Tobacco, where he worked until his retirement from full time work in 1987.
Tom’s work ethic never waned. Even after retiring, he remained active with roles at Video Town, Scenic City Golf, and a small metalworking company.
Tom was a lifelong learner with a determination to master whatever he set his mind to. Over the years, he shot bow & arrow, sailed dinghies and windsurfed, hunted, played hockey, fished, shot target pistols, golfed, rode motorcycles, and lawn bowled. While hobbies came and went, playing darts was a lasting passion, with 65+ trophies collected over the years.
Thanks go to the staff at Southbridge for treating Tom like a family member, delivering expert care with love and a sense of fun.
As Tom wished, he has been cremated. All are warmly invited to a come-and-go memorial at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6, 1450 2nd Ave W, Owen Sound, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
