West Grey council is supporting creating an inventory of its surplus items available for an online silent auction, with the funds collected going to future community requests for grants.
During a meeting on May 2, council received a motion from Coun. Scott Foerster.
The motion says a by-law allows the municipality to dispose of items deemed surplus and no longer useful to the municipality, and states the municipality can arrange for their disposal, which includes competitive bidding.
It adds as the municipality has amassed a considerable amount of items like furniture, decorations, and assorted chattels staff have determined is no longer useful, Forester proposed creating an inventory of their surplus items available for bidding, and report back on the outcome of the auction.
Mayor Kevin Eccles says Chatsworth does something similar to what Coun. Scott Foerster is proposing.
“Each year they have a garage sale at the arena, municipal but also community donated items that people want to donate and that money is used for programs as such in the community of Chatsworth and they have run it for quite a few years,” says Eccles.
