That one slipped away from the Attack.
William Schneid scored a natural hat trick in the third period and finished with four points, as the Barrie Colts rallied from 2-0 down after two to beat the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in overtime in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday evening at Sadlon Arena.
Eamon Edgar was the overtime hero for the Colts (2-9-1), scoring a power play goal at 2:55 as Harry Nansi watched from the box after being called for hooking.
Barrie ended a five-game losing streak.
The Colts flipped the script in the third, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead with under five minutes to go as Schneid scored three.
“A bit of broken record, but it takes 60 minutes to win in this league. I thought we did an unbelievable job executing our game plan for 40 minutes, limiting slot shots against and keeping Barrie to the exterior,” Attack Head Coach Keenan Reynolds says. “Ultimately, they were able to convert. They were opportunistic on some chances in the third period. We had (37 shots) and only two goals, clearly we were not opportunistic.”
“And that’s what happens.”
Lucian Bernat, Max Fransen and Jake Crawford scored for the Attack (3-8-1). The goals by Bernat and Fransen both came in the second period and put the Attack up 2-0, and both were their firsts in the OHL.
Bernat’s came on a 2-on-1, after he took a pass from Nansi and whipped a high shot in to give the Attack the 1-0 lead early in the the second.
Around eight minutes later it was Attack true rookie defenceman getting his first in the OHL, scoring on a point shot from the left side that beat Matvei Nikonovich blocker-side.
But then Barrie turned the game in the third period.
Schneid’s first came five minutes into the third and cut the Attack lead to 2-1. Schneid was left unmarked near the right faceoff dot and took a pass from Edgar, then placed a perfect shot short-side high over the glove of Ryerson Leenders.
Schneid then tied the game at 11:17. Carter Lowe put a pass out front from behind the Attack net and found Schneid buried in defenders, he put a low shot by Leenders.
Then with under five minutes to play, he completed the natural hat trick, breaking up the left wing and snapping a pretty shot by the glove of Leenders high and inside the far post, giving Barrie its first lead of the game 3-2.
The Attack would equalize with the net empty and send it to overtime, as Jake Crawford was credited with a goal that moved like a pinball towards the Barrie net and hit multiple defenders on its way past Nikonovich with 1:48 remaining.
Nansi took a hooking penalty just over two minutes into overtime, getting his stick into the hands of Lowe as he tried to drive the net.
Edgar ended it on the 4-on-3 power play, lifting a high shot from the slot past Leenders.
Nikonovich made 34 saves in the win, while Leenders stopped 29 taking the loss. Owen Sound outshot Barrie 37-33 while going 0 for 1 on the power play; the Colts finish 1 for 2.
Next up for the Attack is back-to-back home games Saturday and Sunday at the Bayshore, starting with London Knights Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Sunday afternoon, the Colts are in town.
