Town of Saugeen Shores representatives took three key issues to a conference with provincial and federal officials in Ottawa this week.
They were at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference from August 16-19.
Council members and Town staff met with the Ontario ministry of energy and mines to talk about a framework and funding to enable host municipalities to participate in community benefit agreement discussions for large-scale energy projects.
Bruce Power is going through the assessment phase for a proposed Bruce C project, which would add up to 4,800 megawatts of nuclear capacity to its Tiverton site.
Community benefit agreements can be used to offset impacts of a development on a community by providing funding or support of some kind.
They also met with the office of the federal minister of fisheries to talk about lease adjustments to access funding for the Chantry Island Lighthouse and Port Elgin Harbour capital improvements that could include some dock replacement.
The Chantry Island Lighthouse is an 1850s structure on the island off Southampton’s main beach and one of six imperial towers built around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. It needs repair and restoration of the stone on the outside of the tower. That work was estimated at about $1.5 million or more back in 2023.
Town reps also met with the office of the federal minister of housing, infrastructure and communities to advocate for support of the Town’s Build Communities Strong Fund applications to advance Bruce Street and water and wastewater infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate future growth.
