The Department of National Defence is inviting public feedback as it assesses potential impacts related to the proposed Ontario Pumped Storage Project in Meaford.
The project, led by TC Energy, would see a 1,000-megawatt hydroelectric facility developed on land currently used by the Canadian Armed Forces.
As part of the process, DND is conducting a separate impact assessment focused on the potential relocation of military infrastructure within the training area. Officials say this relocation would only occur if the broader project is approved.
According to federal agencies, the infrastructure relocation is being treated as a distinct project under the Impact Assessment Act, requiring its own review of environmental effects.
Local advocacy group Save Georgian Bay has raised concerns about transparency and the potential for additional costs tied to infrastructure and environmental impacts not fully reflected in the main project proposal.
Meanwhile, TC Energy says the project is being reviewed through a comprehensive federal process and that any costs associated with relocating defence infrastructure would be covered by the company.
The outcome of the DND review will help inform a future decision on whether the project can proceed on federal land.
Written comments related specifically to the infrastructure relocation component are being accepted until May 22, 2026.
