No one was hurt in a house fire in Lion’s Head.
Northern Bruce Peninsula firefighters responded to a blaze at 10 William Street just prior to 6 a.m. Sunday morning, and arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames. Wiarton firefighters were also called in to assist.
It took about five hours to bring the fire under control. Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt says in all, about 23 firefighters were at the scene.
“There were a couple exposures that were very close on either side, houses and an RV trailer,” Burt says. “We wanted to make sure we protected them, so the fire didn’t spread to additional structures.”
Burt says the occupants were not home at the time of the fire.
The structure was a total loss. The damage estimate is $700,000.
Burt says the cause of the fire is undetermined, based on the extent of the damage to the structure.
He adds while there wasn’t anyone home when the fire occurred, this incident still serves as a reminder of the importance of smoke alarms.
“We did hear audible working smoke alarms at time of fire. I think it’s an important message. Smoke alarms save lives,” Burt adds. “If somebody had have been in structure at time this fire started. This fire spread very rapidly and very quickly. The one thing that would have saved that person, would have been a working smoke alarm. I encourage everybody to check their smoke alarms, at least monthly, to make sure they work.”
