After a decade of serving cones, sundaes, and summer treats, the owners of Fun In The Sun Ice Cream Parlour say they are retiring from the business.
In a message shared on social media, Mitch Birney reflected on ten years of operating the popular ice cream shop and thanked their family, staff, and customers for their support.
Mitch credited his wife Janis and their children for helping build the business, saying the family spent countless hours preparing for busy summer days, working late into the night, and ensuring every customer left with a smile.
Over the past decade, the shop has hired more than 130 employees and provided sponsorships or donations to more than 140 individuals, groups, and community organizations.
The owners say the shop quickly became a popular destination in the town, often drawing long lineups during the summer months, and became a top-selling location for Kawartha Dairy products, selling the most of any store in Canada.
The Birney’s also thanked past and present employees for helping create the welcoming atmosphere customers came to know, and expressed gratitude to the community for making the business part of family traditions and celebrations.
While the owners say it’s time to “hang up the scoops,” they say the next chapter for the ice cream parlour is already on the horizon. Kawartha Dairy purchased the business and has already begun renovation work in order to be open by summer.
