Owen Sound Police shot a dog that attacked an officer during a traffic stop in the city’s east end over the weekend.
City Police say they received a phone call from a citizen Saturday evening about a possible impaired driver in the area of 16th Street East.
“The caller reported a white pick-up being driven erratically, hitting curbs and disobeying traffic controls,” Owen Sound Police say in a release. “Officers responded to the area and conducted a traffic stop in the 1900 block of 17th Street East. Police administered a roadside screening device which the male failed and he was arrested.”
According to police, a dog was in the suspect’s truck and during the arrest the animal bit an officer multiple times.
Owen Sound Police say a second officer got involved, and “the dog released the first officer.” But then the dog allegedly charged at a third police officer in “an aggressive manner.”
“And that officer, fearing for their safety, dispatched the dog with their service pistol,” Police say in a release.
The accused was taken back to the police station and provided breath samples above the legal limit. He was charged with impaired operation.
“The officer that was attacked was transported to hospital by ambulance and received emergency medical care for the bites and was released,” Owen Sound Police say.
