The Ontario Provincial Police is focusing on school bus safety over the next two weeks.
From March 2 to March 13, West Region OPP detachments will increase patrols along school bus routes and in school zones to ensure drivers are obeying traffic laws around buses.
Police say failing to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing is a serious offence. First-time offenders can face fines between $400 and $2,000, along with six demerit points.
Drivers are reminded that yellow flashing lights indicate a bus is preparing to stop and motorists in both directions must slow down and be ready to stop. When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, the bus is fully stopped and drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop.
Police say the blitz is aimed at improving safety for students as they travel to and from school.
