Bruce Power has completed the construction phase of the Major Component Replacement project for Unit 3 at its nuclear generating station, marking a significant milestone in Ontario’s long-term energy plan.
The company says the work was finished safely, on budget, and ahead of schedule following thousands of hours of work by skilled tradespeople and project partners.
Eric Chassard, Bruce Power’s President and Chief Executive Officer says “Completing the construction phase of Unit 3’s Major Component Replacement is a major step forward for Ontario’s clean energy future. Thanks to the safe, high quality and disciplined work of our people, skilled trades and partners — and the innovative tooling that’s delivering step improvements in nuclear refurbishment performance — we’re now focused on returning this renewed unit to service on budget and ahead of schedule.”
The renewed unit will now move into refueling, regulatory inspections, and final preparations before returning to service in the coming months. Once operational, Unit 3 is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power a city the size of Brampton for the next 35 years or more.
The refurbishment is part of Bruce Power’s broader life-extension program covering Units 3 through 8 between 2020 and 2033. The initiative supports roughly 22,000 jobs annually and contributes about four billion dollars to Ontario’s economy each year.
Energy planners say the project will also help meet growing electricity demand while maintaining a reliable, low-carbon power supply for the province.
