For readers who like magic, mystery and adventure the latest in a fantasy book trilogy is set to be launched in Kincardine.
Local author Theresa Leyes, says “They are books that are based in Kincardine, lots of local landmarks, Queen Street, Victoria Park, in the acknowledgment section it actually talks about the Aztec Theatre and Book and Beans bookstore.”
She says anyone can enjoy them, but they’re meant for readers 12 and up. “The perfect age is really in the teenage realm, anywhere from 14 to 18 but there are some highly proficient readers who are 12 and 13 who would enjoy the book as well. Some adults also like the book,” says Leyes.
“It’s being very well received,” says Leyes. It’s also for sale on Amazon, and you can find reviews of it there.
In the first book, The Quest for Calinore, a 13-year old boy named Dylan Edwards is given a magic amulet and a journal for his birthday, and his ordinary life is transformed by a dangerous mission to rescue his relatives in another realm.
The second book The Return of the White Witch, begins after Dylan Edwards, is attacked and left for dead. He is now more determined than ever to end the tyranny of King Mordrid and his evil accomplice Drucilla, who have seized the Kingdom of Calinore.
Leyes says she wants as many young people to come out to the launch as possible. It’s due to be held at the Word Squirrel in Kincardine from 2 to 4 -p.m. on August 9th.
Leyes says right now, it’s a trilogy but she may go beyond that.
Her inspiration for the book series comes from reading to her son when he was young and her passion for children’s fiction grew. “I began telling him stories I made up myself, creating my own world of characters, settings, and elaborate plots. This was the beginning of my writing journey,” says Leyes.
She is a recently retired graphic design teacher and former art director. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Education degree, University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English Literature and Fine Art, and Sheridan College with a three-year Diploma in Illustration.
She is also the designer of the book covers.
