A local swim team is making a nearly $200,000 donation towards Port Elgin’s new Aquatic and Wellness Centre.
The donation from the Breakers Swim Team will go to cover 75 per cent of the cost of electronic pool timing equipment for the facility.
The Town of Saugeen Shores says in a release the donation supports the shared vision of an aquatic facility which meets the recreational needs of the community as well as putting the town in a position where it can hold competitive swim meets and other sporting events.
President and Coach of the Breakers Swim Team Jeff Horseman says, “This technology will allow our athletes, and competitors from across the region, to experience high-calibre swim meets right here in Saugeen Shores. It’s exciting to see our community become a destination for competitive swimming, and we’re proud to help make it possible.”
Mayor Luke Charbonneau adds the Breakers Swim Team has been a great partner in helping shape the new facility.
“Their leadership, expertise, and generosity will ensure this facility is not only a hub for recreation, but also a destination for competitive swimming events. This donation brings their vision to life and serves as an inspiring example of how community support can help make this project a reality,” says Charbonneau.
The new Aquatic and Wellness Centre has seen significant community support, including a recent $50,000 donation from a local hotel.
The town broke ground on the project in 2023, which is set to include an eight-lane competitive pool, a leisure pool, a fitness centre, walking track, gym, and multi-purpose program rooms.
People and businesses interested in supporting the project can take part in the Commemorative Brick Campaign by purchasing a personalized brick which will be displayed at the facility.
