A 22-year-old Owen Sound man faces an impaired driving charge and other offences after allegedly rolling over a stolen vehicle downtown Monday evening.
City police, firefighters and Grey County paramedics were called to a single vehicle rollover in the 1000 block of 1st Avenue East just prior to 6 p.m. Monday.
An image of the accident shows the vehicle came to rest on its side, and police say it was blocking the one-way street. It had to be towed away.
“There were several empty and full beer cans in the vehicle and on the roadway,” Owen Sound Police say in a statement.
According to police, the vehicle had been reported stolen to Grey Bruce OPP earlier in the day.
City Police allege the driver climbed out of the vehicle after the incident and left the on foot. Three passengers remain on scene, one of whom was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police say the driver was identified, located in the area and arrested. The 22-year-old from Owen Sound — who was unlicensed — was taken to the police station and allegedly provided breath samples that showed his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit.
Owen Sound Police did not identify the accused.
He was charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to remain at scene of accident and possession of a stolen vehicle.
“Police would like to acknowledge the assistance received from multiple witnesses who remained in the area to assist with the investigation,” Owen Sound Police say.
