Excelsiors To Owen Sound
The Board of Directors of the Brampton Excelsior Major Lacrosse Club issued a statement yesterday pertaining to the pending shift of the franchise to Owen Sound.
Citing primarily financial factors, including the loss of an historical designation grant from the city of Brampton for of $30,000 per year, the organization confirmed the transfer of the team to Joe Norton in 2018.
Therefore, the Excelsiors organization, in spite of any protests from other parties, see nothing that would prevent the club from shifting their base of operation to Owen Sound for the next lacrosse season.
Meanwhile in Owen Sound last night, local lacrosse officials at every level gathered together discuss the incoming Major franchise.
Representatives from Minor Lacrosse, the Junior B NorthStar program and the Bug Juice Senior NorthStars were on hand
Excelsiors Statement
The Board of Directors of the Brampton Excelsior Lacrosse Club (BELC) would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of the misinformation and assumptions which have sadly played out on social media recently.
As any supporter of Major Series Lacrosse is aware, there is a substantial cost to be able to field a championship quality team. In the years leading up to 2012, the Brampton Major Excelsiors were financially viable and competitive, in large part through the financial support of a major Corporate sponsor, several smaller local sponsors, and a very generous annual contribution from the City of Brampton, under Mayor Susan Fennell. Unfortunately, after several years of backing our program, the Corporate sponsor elected to not return. This was a turning point in our program and forced us to examine how we could proceed with our on-floor product. We did everything necessary to continue to gather local sponsors, and keep the team on the floor annually. In late 2014 the City of Brampton elected a new leader. Subsequently the Major Excelsiors historical designation grant of $30,000.00 per year was eliminated from the City of Brampton budget and after 2016 funding was no longer available to us.
With the enormous loss of sponsorship and grant monies which we had suffered, and with other programs in the BELC requiring funding for their teams, it became apparent to our Board that despite our best efforts, we could no longer keep the Major program viable, without having to sell players and relying on our Junior and Senior B affiliates to loan us players to ensure we had a roster available on game nights. These struggles were no secret within lacrosse circles, but no major corporate sponsors were coming forward with offers to bail out our storied program.
Between 2012 and 2017 our sponsorship and grants decreased by $80,000.00 year over year. We faced the decision of folding the team or continuing to struggle fiscally, and in the win column, while selling top quality talent to make ends meet. At the end of 2017 a former Coach introduced us to someone who had an interest in acquiring a Major Series Lacrosse team in Ontario, and it appeared to address the challenges in keeping the team going.
In February 2018, the BELC Executive authorized our President, the Board member responsible for the Majors, and our legal counsel to enter into discussions with the interested party. In April 2018, the board voted to give approval for them to negotiate and complete the transfer of the team to Joe Norton, the owner of Bug Juice. It is critical to note that the Majors were not sold for $1,500 as was indicated. The Majors were a financially insolvent team that was legally transferred to an independent owner who would keep the team from folding.
While we are all disappointed at the relocation of a storied team, which many of us have been part of for generations, we hope everyone can recognize the difficulty in realizing we could no longer sustain our Major program, given the economic realities in fielding a competitive MSL team.
The BELC Board are open to exploring options to continue the tradition of Major Lacrosse in Brampton under the Excelsior banner, but this will only be done if a new entity comes forward to apply for a new franchise in MSL with the sustainable funding to do so.
Ward Hired By Golden Knights
Former Owen Sound Grey Plater & Attack forward Joel Ward was hired as an assistant coach for the Vegas Golden Knights’ American Hockey League affiliate in Henderson, Nevada.
Undrafted by NHL clubs, Ward graduated from the Attack, went to the University of Prince Edward Island for 4 years and then turned pro.
Eventually he played more than 700 NHL games and finished with 133 regular season goals and 22 playoff markers.
His biggest goal in the NHL was in the 2012 NHL Playoffs when his overtime marker in Game 7 allowed the Washington Capitals to eliminate Boston.
Prior to turning pro, Ward played 4 years of junior hockey in Owen Sound and is one of the few who played for the Greys, the Platers and the Attack.

ATTACK HUNGER CAMPAIGN ADAPTING TO MEET FOOD BANK NEEDS
In a traditional season the Attack Hunger Campaign presented by IG Wealth Management would be held at the Owen Sound Attack’s first Saturday home game in December, with fans donating thousands of pounds non-perishable food items and raising valuable funds for the Salvation Army Food Bank in Owen Sound. A delayed start to the Ontario Hockey League season has forced the 7th annual food drive to find new ways to expand its program to help support the growing need. The Attack combined with long-term partner IG Wealth Management and the Salvation Army have done just that.
“Our involvement in the community has been a priority since the team’s inception and in a pandemic, it is more important than ever” said Attack Manager of Marketing and Communications Greg Hoddinott. “Not doing Attack Hunger was never an option! We have adapted our program to hopefully provide the greatest impact to the users of food bank.”
The 2020 Attack Hunger Campaign will continue to have its traditional elements they are just being done a little differently this year. Instead of it being a one-night event, Attack Hunger will run for a full week, from November 30th to December 4th. This year the campaign will have three main drop-off locations the IG Wealth Management office on the east side, the Attack office downtown and Foodland on the west side.
The Attack will also be distributing close to 600 Attack Hunger bags to season ticket members the week of November 23rd to 27th, hoping they will return them full the following week.
With some people maybe not feeling comfortable with making a physical food donation and others who may have historically made a monetary donation on Attack Hunger game nights in the past, the Attack Hunger Campaign has made sure there is still a way for everyone to participate this year. Simply visit the Attack Shack online store and follow the Attack Hunger link to make a monetary donation to this year’s campaign. All donations over $10 will receive a charitable tax receipt directly from the Salvation Army.
“Now more than ever, people are facing new financial challenges and frightening realities” said Salvation Army’s Community and Family Services Co-ordinator Alice Wannan. “The Attack Hunger Campaign has grown to be our second largest fundraising initiative in Owen Sound. Together, IG Wealth, The Owen Sound Attack and The Salvation Army will ensure no one goes hungry in our community.”
Since a food banks buying power is at least two and a half times that of an individual, the group decided an increased focus on monetary donations was needed. This year Attack Hunger has added an appeal to businesses in the area to make a monetary donation to help drive the amount food available to the nearly 3600 individuals who have received food assistance in Owen Sound since March.
Attack Hunger has set a lofty goal of supporting 400 families by also raising $10,000 through a separate appeal to local businesses. The team at IG Wealth Management in Owen Sound have kicked off this part of the campaign by donating $3,500 and hope others will follow their lead.
“Lost in the statistics of increased Food Bank usage is the harsh reality that those numbers may actually be some of our friends and neighbours who have been set back financially by the COVID-19 pandemic. We know this because the number of first time Food Bank users has risen dramatically since March.” said IG Wealth Regional Director Fraser Petley. “At IG Wealth Management, we believe that what distinguishes a great community is how it looks after its own in tough times and we encourage everyone to support Attack Hunger as you are able, however you are most comfortable in order to support the families among us in need this year.”
