The Harmony Centre in downtown Owen Sound has launched a fundraiser to put a new floor in its much used lower level.
The 150 year old former church building is now a non-profit organization that welcomed over 26,000 visits last year. That’s based on space bookings, events, rehearsals, performances and drop-in use.
Operations Manager Amy Stewart says, “26,000 visits a year tells us that people are using this building constantly — to sing, dance, rehearse, meet, learn, eat, celebrate, and connect. It’s wonderful to see, but it also means we have to take very good care of the space if we want it to continue serving the community.”
The volunteer run charity and community centre makes a point of keeping space rental rates very low for the many groups who use it for offices, studios, events and concerts.
Replacing the Lower Hall floor is a top priority for 2026, and donations are now being accepted toward the project. Once complete, the new floor will improve safety, accessibility, aesthetics, and durability for decades to come.
Jeff Elie, Chair of the Board of Directors, stresses the importance of ongoing stewardship, saying, “Harmony Centre belongs to the community, and we treat that responsibility seriously,” he says. “This building is one of Owen Sound’s busiest gathering places, and if we want it to keep supporting the work of so many groups, we must maintain it with care. The Lower Hall upgrade is essential — and it’s something we can achieve together.”
Elie says lots of events and classes happen on the lower floor including Tai Chi classes and even weddings.
He says the floor has beome pitted and some of the tiles are coming up. “We’ve tried to patch it but it’s still a challenge,” says Elie noting things like dance classes need a smooth floor.
You’re invited to contribute to the flooring campaign, which has a goal of $80,000 by donating online at harmonycentre.ca
You can also drop off a donation during operating hours.
